How we chose

We ranked these eight power units on what the manufacturers publish, not on marketplace listings. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure we say so.

The criteria, in order of weight:

  • Air watts and water lift. Air watts is the combined suction-and-airflow figure; water lift (sealed suction) tells you how the unit copes with a long pipe run.
  • Filtration and collection. Bagged, bagless or hybrid. Hybrids scored higher because they let you change your mind later.
  • Warranty conditions. Registration deadlines, authorized-service rules and bag requirements matter more than the headline years.
  • Inlet compatibility. All eight fit 2-inch pipe. Most support low-voltage and direct-connect electric inlets; the Drainvac lists low-voltage only.
  • What else you need. None includes a hose or floor tool.

Beam is a dealer-only brand, so it appears with a “find a dealer” note rather than a buy button.

1. OVO 700ST-35H: best overall

The OVO 700 has no weak spot in the spec sheet. A 5.7 in 2-stage thru-flow motor with soft start delivers 700 air watts and 140 in of water lift, OVO rates it for 8,000 sq ft and up to 8 inlets, and at 63 dB it is quieter than most units in this class. The 35 L canister runs with a 22.5 L disposable bag or without one. The warranty is 10 years on the motor, module, body and bin, 1 year labor, with an optional paid extension to 25 years.

Two conditions: the FP-12 permanent filter must be replaced every 2 years and bags changed at least twice a year to keep the warranty, and OVO’s own storefront did not list this unit in October 2026. Weight and CFM are not published.

Skip it if you want a unit you can buy direct from the maker today, or you need more than 8 inlets.

2. VacuMaid SR14: most powerful

At 740 air watts, 138 CFM and 138 in of water lift, the SR14 has the strongest published numbers here, at 58 dB with a vented exhaust. It is built by Lindsay Manufacturing in Ponca City, Oklahoma, around an Ametek Lamb 5.7 in 2-stage motor. Collection is cyclonic with an inverted cloth bag; an optional stem lets you run a sealed paper bag. A front utility valve is included. Lifetime canister warranty, 10 years on motor and electrical parts.

The catch: VacuMaid rates it for 6,000 sq ft, lower than the Beam 475 and SR66 on this page, so we rank it on the manufacturer’s own figure. It is also just under 40 in tall.

Skip it if your home is at the top of the “large” range, or you want sealed disposable bags without the extra stem.

3. Beam 475: best premium hybrid

The Beam 475 pairs a 6.6 in motor with Beam’s Hybrid Gore system: a self-cleaning permanent GORE filter that works with or without a bag. Published figures are 659 air watts, 144.9 in water lift, 135.8 CFM and a 10,000 sq ft rating. Warranty is 10 years or 750 hours on parts and 1 year labor, though a second table on Beam’s site shows 7 years for this model.

Beam has been owned by Trovac Industries since June 2024, and only units manufactured from September 2024 carry the Trovac warranty. Beam is dealer-only; the Amazon listing is a third-party dealer. Sound level is listed as “coming soon”.

Skip it if you want to buy online with a clear warranty path, or you need a published noise figure.

4. VacuMaid SR66: best bagged

The SR66’s Ametek Lamb 6.6 in 2-stage tangential bypass motor is rated for roughly 1,500 hours, the longest published motor-life figure in this group. It produces 663 air watts, 139 CFM and 132 in of water lift at 58 dB vented, rated for 10,000 sq ft, using the multi-layer HPB2H HEPA-style bag (27 qt). VacuMaid lists it as Hide-A-Hose compatible. Lifetime canister warranty, 10 years on the motor.

“HEPA” here means the bag media, not a certified exhaust filter, and VacuMaid’s page and spec sheet disagree on height (36 in versus 26 in).

Skip it if you want the option to run bagless.

5. OVO 630ST-25H: best value

The 630 is the OVO 700’s smaller sibling: a 4.2 in single-stage motor giving 630 air watts and 122 in of water lift, rated for 5,000 sq ft and 5 inlets, at 60 dB. The 25 L canister is hybrid, with a 12.5 L bag or bagless, and the warranty matches the 700. OVO also sells it in a kit with a carpet attachment set.

Skip it if your pipe run is long or your home is over 5,000 sq ft; step up to the 700.

6. Prolux CV12000: best warranty

Prolux promises 25 years on the body and 10 on the motor, and pays shipping both ways on claims. Built by Trovac Industries, it has a 2-speed, 2-stage insulated bypass motor, 142 CFM and 116 in of water lift, and runs with a HEPA bag plus cloth filter or bagless. A muffler ships in the box, so outside venting is optional. It weighs 22 lb.

Prolux does not publish air watts, amps or noise, so we cannot rank it on suction. The warranty requires Prolux bags and authorized service.

Skip it if you want to compare air watts before buying.

7. Drainvac MP-Air 550: best NuTone replacement

NuTone’s PurePower units are discontinued and the NuTone central vacuum line is now owned by Drainvac. The MP-Air 550 is Drainvac’s 550 air watt, 6 gal bagged unit on 391-series bags, rated for 4,000 sq ft at 66 dB, with a utility inlet on the canister. Warranty is 5 years on the power unit and 3 years parts and labor (the Amazon bullet says 3 years). Water lift and CFM are not published, and Drainvac lists low-voltage inlet control only.

Skip it if your home is over 4,000 sq ft or you want published water-lift numbers.

8. OVO 630ST-18B: best compact

Same 630 air watts and 122 in as the 630ST-25H, in a top-load 18 L canister 19.49 in tall and 11.42 in wide. It is bag-only (12.5 L bag) with a mandatory rinse-only protective filter, rated for 5,000 sq ft and 5 inlets, 60 dB, 10-year parts warranty.

Skip it if you have the wall space for the 25 L unit, which holds more between bag changes.

What to check before you buy

  • Your inlet type. Low-voltage or direct-connect electric. The Drainvac lists low-voltage only. See identify your inlet type.
  • Inlet count. OVO publishes 8 for the 700 and 5 for the 630s; check the manual for the others.
  • Mounting and exhaust. Most of these recommend venting outside. Only Prolux includes a muffler.
  • Warranty conditions. Registration, authorized service, genuine bags. No brand here says plainly whether marketplace purchases are covered.
  • What is in the box. No hose, powerhead or pipe. Budget for a hose and kit.

Frequently asked questions

What size central vacuum do I need?

Match the unit to your pipe run and inlet count, not just the square-foot number on the box. Manufacturer ratings in this list run from 4,000 sq ft (Drainvac MP-Air 550) to 10,000 sq ft (Beam 475, VacuMaid SR66). Our system sizer tool does the arithmetic from your floor plan.

Bagged or bagless?

Bagged is cleaner to empty and better if anyone in the house has allergies. Bagless saves on bags but you empty a bin of fine dust. Hybrid units such as the OVO 700, Beam 475 and Prolux CV12000 let you run either way, which is why they rank high here.

Does a central vacuum power unit come with a hose?

Usually not. Every power unit on this list ships as the canister, bracket and (for some) one bag or filter. You add a hose, wand and floor tool that match your inlet type, or buy a kit variant where one is offered.

Can I replace my old NuTone with one of these?

Yes. All eight use standard 2-inch central vacuum pipe and low-voltage inlet wiring. The Drainvac MP-Air 550 uses the same 391-series bags as the discontinued NuTone PurePower units, and Drainvac now owns the NuTone central vacuum line. See our replacement units roundup for the fit details.

Do I need an electrician?

Not for the unit itself. All eight plug into a standard 120 V outlet, and the low-voltage inlet wiring is safe for a careful DIYer. If you add direct-connect electric inlets, that is 120 V work and should be done by a licensed electrician.

Is the warranty valid if I buy on Amazon?

None of these manufacturers publishes a clear answer about marketplace purchases. All of them require proof of purchase, most require registration, and several void coverage if anyone but an authorized service center repairs the unit. Keep the invoice and register the unit the day it arrives.
