How we chose

Bagless sounds simpler, but the filter design decides whether you will like living with it. We ranked these six on manufacturer-published air watts and water lift, then on how the unit separates and holds dust (cyclonic, permanent filter, or hybrid with an optional bag), warranty conditions and inlet compatibility. All six fit standard 2-inch pipe and support low-voltage and direct-connect electric inlets. Hybrids ranked above pure bagless units because they give you a way out if the dust bin proves messy.

Two of the picks have specification conflicts, and one is sourced only from an Amazon listing. We say so in each entry.

1. OVO 700ST-35H: best overall

The OVO 700 is the hybrid we would put in most homes. A 5.7 in 2-stage thru-flow motor with soft start gives 700 air watts and 140 in of water lift at 63 dB, and OVO rates it for 8,000 sq ft and 8 inlets. The 35 L bottom-load canister runs with a 22.5 L FD-22.5L bag or without one; either way the washable FP-12 permanent filter stays in place. Warranty is 10 years on the motor, module, body and bin, 1 year labor, with an optional paid 25-year extension. To keep it, replace the permanent filter every 2 years and, if you run bags, change them at least twice a year.

OVO’s own storefront did not list this unit in October 2026 (the 750 and 630 were listed), and weight and CFM are not published.

Skip it if you want to buy from the maker directly, or you need more than 8 inlets.

2. OVO 750ST-35H: most powerful

Same canister, same filter and bag, more motor: 750 air watts, 146 in water lift, rated for 10,000 sq ft and up to 10 inlets. The 5.7 in 2-stage thru-flow motor has soft start, and the warranty matches the 700 (10 years parts, 1 year labor, optional 25-year extension). OVO also sells a Smart variant with app control that bypasses the low-voltage system; the Amazon listing is the standard ST unit.

The cost of the extra power is noise: 68 dB against 63 for the 700.

Skip it if your home is under 8,000 sq ft and the unit will hang near a bedroom wall.

3. Beam 475: best premium hybrid

Beam’s Hybrid Gore design uses a permanent, self-cleaning GORE membrane filter and lets you run a bag or not. Published figures are 659 air watts, 144.9 in water lift, 135.8 CFM, 14.1 A and a 10,000 sq ft rating from one 6.6 in motor with two fan stages. Warranty is 10 years or 750 hours on parts, 1 year labor, though a second table on Beam’s site shows 7 years for this model.

Beam has been owned by Trovac Industries since June 2024, and only units manufactured from September 2024 carry the Trovac warranty. It is a dealer brand; the Amazon listing is from a third-party dealer and its 4,500 sq ft figure conflicts with Beam’s 10,000. Noise is “coming soon” on Beam’s page.

Skip it if you want to buy online, or you need to compare noise figures.

4. Prolux CV12000: best warranty

The CV12000, built by Trovac Industries, runs a HEPA filtration bag plus a cloth filter, or bagless into a 3.75 gal (14.2 L) bin. The 2-speed, 2-stage insulated bypass motor publishes 142 CFM and 116 in of water lift, with an 8,000 sq ft, 8-outlet rating. A muffler is in the box, so venting outside is optional. The promise is 25 years on the body and 10 on the motor, with Prolux paying shipping both ways on claims; non-Prolux bags void it.

Air watts, amps and noise are not published, and Prolux’s site hints at a 2026 revision (a HEPA filter part fits only units bought before January 31, 2026).

Skip it if you want to compare air watts, or you plan to use third-party bags.

5. VacuMaid P125P: best true cyclonic

The P125P is a real cyclonic unit: a 7.2 in two-stage tangential bypass motor spins the air so dirt drops into a 27 qt canister with no filter in the airstream, and a patented air channel lets you line the can with a plastic bag for easier emptying. VacuMaid describes it as a replacement option for compatible existing installations, rates it for 9,000 sq ft, and backs it with a lifetime canister and 10-year motor warranty. Made in Ponca City, Oklahoma.

The suction numbers are the issue. VacuMaid publishes 440 air watts, 124.6 in water lift and 115.8 CFM, the lowest air-watt figure in this group, while Amazon’s content for the same unit claims 525 air watts. We rank on the manufacturer’s number. It is also the loudest here at 75 dB vented.

Skip it if you have long pipe runs or carpet throughout; the air-watt figure is well below the OVOs and Beam.

6. Imperium CV7300: best steel cyclonic

The CV7300 is a one-piece all-steel cyclonic canister with a 38 qt capacity, an optional can liner, and a 6.6 in two-stage tangential bypass motor rated for 1,500 hours. The listing gives 663 air watts, 132 in water lift, 139 CFM, 14 A, 60 dB, a 6,000 sq ft rating and a 10-year warranty, made in the USA. Imperium is Central Vacuum Stores’ private label, built by Lindsay Manufacturing. Those motor figures match the VacuMaid SR66’s exactly and the replacement parts are Lindsay items, but no source states the two share a platform.

It ranks last because every figure comes from the Amazon listing, no manufacturer page is reachable, warranty terms are not published, and the Imperium warranty requires registration within 30 days and claims through the selling dealer. A muffler kit is sold separately.

Skip it if you want manufacturer-verified specs or a readable warranty.

What to check before you buy

  • Exhaust path. Bagless and cyclonic units should vent outside. Only the Prolux ships with a muffler. See the exhaust and muffler guide.
  • Filter upkeep. OVO’s permanent filter must be replaced every 2 years to keep the warranty. Budget for it.
  • Bag option. If allergies are a factor, choose a hybrid and run it with the bag in.
  • Inlet type. All six support low-voltage and direct-connect electric; confirm yours with the inlet type guide.
  • Spec conflicts. The P125P and Beam 475 each have two published numbers for a key figure. Decide on the manufacturer’s.
  • What is in the box. No hose or floor tool with any of these.

What to do next

Read bagged vs bagless if you are still deciding, then size the unit with the system sizer. Once you have a unit, pick a hose that matches your inlets and, for carpet, an electric powerhead.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hybrid central vacuum?

A unit that works either with a disposable bag or without one. OVO, Beam and Prolux all sell hybrids. You can start bagless and switch to bags if the dust bothers you, or run bags most of the time and go bagless when you run out.

Is bagless cheaper to run?

You save on bags, but every bagless and hybrid unit here has a permanent filter that needs cleaning and periodic replacement. OVO requires its permanent filter be replaced every 2 years to keep the warranty. Cyclonic units such as the VacuMaid P125P separate dirt by spinning the air, so they have no filter in the airstream, but they still need the exhaust vented outside.

Why does the VacuMaid P125P have fewer air watts?

VacuMaid's product page states 440 air watts, 124.6 in water lift and 115.8 CFM. Amazon's content for the same unit says 525 air watts, 125 in and 116 CFM. We use the manufacturer's figure, and we do not know why they differ. Either number is lower than the other five units here.

Do bagless central vacuums need to vent outside?

OVO, Beam and VacuMaid recommend it, and for a cyclonic unit with no bag it matters more because the finest dust leaves with the exhaust. Prolux includes a muffler and treats outside venting as optional. If you cannot vent outside, run a hybrid with the bag in.

Is Imperium a VacuMaid?

Imperium is the private label of Central Vacuum Stores, built by Lindsay Manufacturing, which also makes VacuMaid. The CV7300's listed motor specs match the VacuMaid SR66's motor exactly and its replacement parts are Lindsay items, but no source states that it is a rebadged VacuMaid model.

Which is best for allergies?

Run a hybrid with the bag in. The OVO 700 and 750 use a 22.5 L disposable bag plus a washable permanent filter, and the Prolux CV12000 uses a HEPA bag plus a cloth filter. The Beam 475's GORE filter is permanent and self-cleaning in either mode. Our filtration guide explains the differences.
