How we chose

A powerhead is the part of a central vacuum you actually hold, so build and fit matter more than any single number. We ranked these seven on brush width and height adjustment, belt design (enclosed and cogged or Poly-V belts last longer than flat belts), swivel and weight, headlight, and above all how the head connects to your hose, because an electric head on the wrong wand is a paperweight. Figures come from the manufacturer where it publishes them; Wessel-Werk’s US specs come from retailers, and we flag that.

No powerhead here publishes air watts; that is the power unit’s job. What the head controls is how well the brush lifts dirt out of carpet.

1. Cen-Tec CT20QD: best overall electric

The CT20QD gets the most things right at once: a 14 in nozzle, 4 height positions, a Poly-V Quiet Drive belt (part 40999), a headlight, and an EZ Release quick-release neck on a flush integrated wand. It weighs 8.18 lb with the wand and 5.3 lb bare, and the agitator is a replaceable part (41065A). It needs a 120 V total-control electric hose with a flush plug at the handle.

Cen-Tec does not publish a warranty term for it.

Skip it if your hose is low-voltage and you do not plan to change it, or your handle end is not a flush plug.

2. Wessel-Werk EBK 360: best integrated wand

The EBK 360 is the head you see on many dealer-installed systems. Five brush heights set by a pedal, a double swivel neck that turns 180 degrees, a neck-release pedal, an enclosed side-mounted cogged belt, a headlight and automatic shut-off when you park it upright. Retailers say it is made in Germany. Working width is around 12 in but not verified, and motor wattage is quoted as 300 or 350 W depending on the retailer, so we do not record it.

The US integrated-wand versions are specific to hose families (Plastiflex, Beam, Electrolux and Vacuflo among them), and the Amazon listing does not say which version it ships. Confirm the wand plug against your hose before ordering.

Skip it if you cannot confirm the wand matches your electric hose.

3. SEBO ET-2 with 35 ft pigtail hose: best premium kit

SEBO publishes the ET-2’s specs in full: 15 in wide with a 13 in cleaning path, a 200 W, 1.8 A brush motor at 2,700 rpm, a toothed belt with electronic overload protection, 4 manual height levels, a 180-degree swivel and 5.7 lb, made in Germany. It is powered through an electric wand (SEBO part 6272CA or adapter 2780AM) and bundled here with a 35 ft pigtail electric hose, so it works from a standard low-voltage inlet plus a wall outlet. No headlight.

The head is manufacturer-verified; the kit is not. The exact contents behind this listing are unconfirmed (typically hose, electric wand, 4 to 6 tools, hanger and sock), and retailers quote 5 or 10 years of warranty inconsistently.

Skip it if you already own an electric hose, or you want a headlight.

4. Vacuflo TurboCat Zoom 8702: best air-driven

If you do not want electric, the TurboCat Zoom is the turbine head to get. It is 13 in wide, adjusts height automatically, rides on four wheels, uses a Poly-V quiet-drive belt (8439-01) and fits any 1.25 in friction-fit wand, so it works on a low-voltage or electric hose alike. H-P Products gives it a 3-year warranty. Weight is 6 lb per H-P or 4.95 lb per a retailer. The 8704 is the same head in sapphire.

Skip it if you have deep carpet or a long hose; a turbine head slows down as airflow drops.

5. Wessel-Werk EBK 250: best low-profile

The EBK 250 is a 9.8 in (250 mm) electric head that weighs 4 lb and lays nearly flat on its swivel, with an enclosed fiberglass-reinforced cogged belt and a headlight. It connects by a dual-pin direct connection to an electric wand and needs a 120 V electric hose. This is the head-only listing; the bundle with wand is a separate product, and the battery EBK250DC is a different head altogether. Specs come from retailers.

Skip it if you are buying for a large carpeted room; the width makes it a second head for under furniture, not a first head.

6. Cen-Tec CT25QD: best for edges

The CT25QD moves the Quiet Drive Poly-V belt off-center so the brush reaches both edges of the nozzle, which is what you want along baseboards. It has 4 height positions, a headlight, a double swivel with quick wand release and a flush integrated wand, and weighs 7 lb. Retailers position it as a replacement for the NuTone CT600 and say it fits Beam, Electrolux, Eureka, VacuMaid and NuTone flush-plug hoses. Cen-Tec does not publish the nozzle width or a warranty term.

Skip it if you want a published width to compare, or your hose is not flush-plug.

7. TurboCat 8695: best basic air-driven

The 8695 is the plain TurboCat: 13 in wide, a cogged belt, a friction-fit neck, 5 lb, and no height adjustment. It is the same head as the P7 and crosses over to TurboCat II, Plus, TL2000, T210 and TP210. Retailer specs; no published warranty term.

Skip it if you have mixed carpet heights; the Zoom’s automatic adjustment is worth the step up.

What to check before you buy

  • Hose type. Electric heads need an electric hose. Identify your inlet type, then read hoses explained.
  • Wand plug. Flush plug, dual-pin, or a brand-specific wand. Match it to your hose handle before buying.
  • Width versus furniture. A 14 or 15 in head is fast; a 9.8 in head goes under things.
  • Belt and brush parts. Cen-Tec and Vacuflo publish part numbers for belts and agitators. That is a good sign for long-term ownership.
  • Weight. 4 to 8 lb here. Lighter is kinder on stairs.
  • Warranty. Only Vacuflo publishes one for the heads here (3 years on the Zoom).

What to do next

Read powerheads explained for the electric versus air-driven decision in depth, then pick a matching hose. If you would rather buy hose, wand and head together, the kits roundup covers electric and air-driven kits.

Frequently asked questions

Electric or air-driven powerhead?

Electric if you have carpet, pets, or a long hose. The brush has its own 120 V motor, so it keeps spinning on thick pile. Air-driven turbine heads use the vacuum's airflow to spin the brush, need no wiring and cost less to add, but slow down on deep carpet. For a mostly hard-floor home with a few rugs, air-driven is fine.

What hose does an electric powerhead need?

An electric hose: direct-connect if your inlets are direct-connect electric, or a dual-voltage pigtail hose that plugs into a standard low-voltage inlet and a wall outlet. A low-voltage hose cannot run an electric head. Our hoses roundup lists both kinds.

Will any electric powerhead fit my hose?

No. The head and hose meet at the wand plug, and there are several plug patterns. Integrated-wand heads such as the Cen-Tec CT20QD and CT25QD are built for flush-plug electric hoses; the Wessel-Werk EBK 360 is sold in several US wand versions for different hose families. Ask the seller which hose the wand fits before you buy.

What does the TurboCat fit?

Any standard 1.25 in friction-fit wand. Because it is air-driven, it works with any hose, low-voltage or electric. The 8702 Zoom and the basic 8695 both use that neck.

How wide should a powerhead be?

The heads here run from 9.8 in (EBK 250) to 15 in (SEBO ET-2). Wider covers a room faster; narrower fits under furniture and between chair legs. Most of the heads here are 13 to 14 in.

Why does the SEBO head rank third if it is the best built?

The head's specs are manufacturer-verified and strong, but the kit's exact contents on the marketplace listing are not confirmed, and retailers quote its warranty inconsistently (5 or 10 years). We rank what we can verify.
