Bars place each figure against the 23 whole-house units we track, from the lowest published value to the highest, with the median marked. A bar is drawn only where at least three units publish the figure. Green sits on the better side of the median, amber on the weaker side; amps and weight have no better side.
"Not yet verified" means the manufacturer has not published the figure or we could not confirm it. We never fill a gap with a guess and we do not invent measurements: every figure is the maker's own or a specialty dealer's, and the source is named.
The short version
What we like
- ✓740 air watts, 138 in water lift and 138 CFM, confirmed on VacuMaid's spec sheet
- ✓58 dB with vented exhaust, tied for the quietest in our records
- ✓Sealed 2-layer HPB1 paper bag with inner liner; optional HPB2H HEPA-style bag
- ✓Only 23.375 in tall: fits where a 40 in canister will not

What we'd change
- ✕6,000 sq ft rating is lower than its suction figures suggest
- ✕Bag consumables; no bagless or cloth-bag option on this unit
- ✕Weight not published; VacuMaid does not say whether a starter bag ships with it
Who this unit is for
The VacuMaid SR38 is for a homeowner who wants strong suction and a quiet unit, and who would rather drop a sealed paper bag in the trash than handle a dirt can. VacuMaid rates it for 6,000 sq ft, a conservative figure for its numbers. It is built by Lindsay Manufacturing in Ponca City, Oklahoma.
It is also the VacuMaid to look at when wall space is tight. At 23.375 in tall it is the shortest full-size residential unit in our records; the inverted-bag SR14 with the same motor is nearly 40 in. If a closet, pantry wall or low basement stair landing is the only place the power unit can go, this is the one that fits.
What the specs tell you
VacuMaid’s spec sheet lists 740 air watts, 138 in of water lift and 138 CFM from an Ametek Lamb 5.7 in Ultra 2-stage flow-thru motor drawing 14.5 A. Those are the SR14’s figures to the digit, because it is the same motor. Air watts predicts carpet cleaning at the tool; 740 is among the highest confirmed figures in our records, just under OVO’s 750. Water lift is sealed suction for long runs and climbs; 138 in is strong. CFM is airflow; 138 is strong too. All three are high and in balance, which is the profile you want.
Noise is 58 dB with vented exhaust, tied for quietest in our records.
Collection is a sealed 2-layer disposable paper bag, VacuMaid part HPB1, with an inner liner the maker says is there for strength and burst resistance. The bag is the filter: dirt stays in it, you lift it out and bin it, and the canister stays clean. VacuMaid sells an optional HPB2H HEPA-style bag for the same canister. The record marks the stock unit as not HEPA, which is right; a HEPA-style bag is finer media, not a certified sealed exhaust.
A flow-thru motor, unlike the bypass motors in VacuMaid’s S-series, uses the working airstream to cool itself. That is normal for a sealed-bag unit, where the bag keeps the air clean before it reaches the motor; it is one reason you should never run this unit without a bag in place.
Weight is not published. The Amazon figures match the spec sheet exactly.
Fit and compatibility
Standard 2-inch pipe, wall bracket mount. VacuMaid lists low-voltage and direct-connect electric inlet compatibility. Plug-in 120V, 14.5 A; not hardwired.
Dimensions are 12.875 in diameter by 23.375 in high. Plan on about 2 ft of wall plus room beneath to pull the lower canister and reach the bag. Exhaust outside is listed as recommended and the 58 dB figure assumes a vented exhaust.
What’s in the box, and what you still need
In the box: the power unit. VacuMaid does not say whether a starter bag ships with it, and the record lists no bracket. Confirm both with the seller, and order a pack of HPB1 bags, or HPB2H bags if you want the finer media, with the unit so you are not waiting on a bag to run it.
Not included: hose and attachments, pipe, fittings and inlets. Add an exhaust cap.
Warranty and support
VacuMaid’s product page states a 10 Year Limited Lifetime Warranty. The warranty page breaks that into lifetime limited on the canister and 10 years on the motor and internal electrical, for the original owner on residential installs. Commercial use drops coverage to 90 days. Registration is required, the warranty is non-transferable, and it is void if the system is serviced by anyone other than an authorized dealer using replacement parts. Claims go first to the authorized dealer-installer.
VacuMaid’s warranty page does not mention Amazon or unauthorized sellers. Lindsay Manufacturing sells at least one VacuMaid unit on Amazon directly, so check the seller name on the listing you buy from.
Living with it
This is the lowest-effort VacuMaid to own. When suction drops at the far inlet or the bag looks full, open the canister, lift out the sealed bag, bin it and fit a new one. There is no can to carry outside, no cloth bag to shake out and no filter to wash. The 27 qt capacity is the same as the SR14’s can, so bag changes are not frequent in a normal home.
The trade-off is that you are buying bags for the life of the unit, and you must keep a spare on hand. With the HEPA-style HPB2H bag the exhaust air is cleaner, which helps if the unit cannot be vented outside, though we would still vent it.
At 58 dB vented it is as quiet as full-size units get in our records; it still belongs on a wall that does not back onto a bedroom.
What we’d verify before buying
- Weight: not published.
- Whether a starter bag and a wall bracket ship with the unit; VacuMaid lists neither.
- Current availability of HPB1 bags and the optional HPB2H HEPA-style bags.
- That 6,000 sq ft covers your home; VacuMaid’s rating is conservative but it is the only one published.
- Amazon seller name, to know whether you are buying from Lindsay or a dealer.
