What It Is

The rigid tube between the hose handle and the floor tool. The industry standard is a 1-1/4 in (1.25 in, ~32 mm) OD tube; hose handles have a stub tube of 1-1/8 to 1-1/4 in that slips inside the wand (MD). Telescopic wands adjust roughly 22-39 in (Cen-Tec 34008A 22.5-39 in; 36027 23.5-39 in; Hide-A-Hose comfort-seal wand about 25-38 in). Fixed wands are 18-21 in and are often used in pairs.

What It Does

Sets working height and, on electric systems, carries the power-brush cord.

Lock Types

Friction Fit

Plain tapered ends held by friction; works with any hose stub; can pull apart under load.

Button Lock

A spring button on the hose handle stub (or wand) snaps into a hole in the mating part ('button-down'). Needed for powerheads that lock to the wand; MD notes a wand without an upper button hole still slides over a button-lock stub, so friction wands fit button-lock hoses but not vice versa.

Ratchet/twist Lock

Found on some Vacuflo wands (Cen-Tec notes Vacuflo 'needs a different wand configuration').

Electric Wands

• Cord-channel wands: a groove or clip holds the 120 V pigtail cord from an electric hose to the powerhead; sold as upper/lower pairs or telescopic (MD 'Cord Channel Upper/Lower Wand', 'Telescopic Cord Channel Wand'; Cen-Tec 36291/51394 21 in chrome wands for flush cord management, 36346 for recessed-hose cord).
• Integrated/direct-connect wands: the conductors run inside the wand with plug-in contacts at both ends; brand-specific (MD 'Stealth Integrated', 'Response Integrated' for CT10/CT23, EBK 360 wand; Cen-Tec 39079/39090 'integrated telescopic' with flush or recessed cord). These only work with the matching hose handle and powerhead.
• A 7 in adapter cord lets a short powerhead pigtail reach a cord-channel wand (MD).

Compatibility Checks

• Confirm 1.25 in OD and whether your hose stub is button-lock or friction.
• Electric: integrated wands are system-specific; cord-channel wands are universal for pigtail hoses.
• Hide-A-Hose: hose ends in a 1-1/4 in (SmartSoc, black) or 1-3/8 in (RapidFlex, blue) mini-cuff; tools/wands may need the Hide-A-Hose comfort-seal wand or adapters.
• Fit diameter also governs tools: Cen-Tec tools are 1.25 in; MD tools fit 1-1/8 to 1-1/4 in.

Common Mistakes

• Buying a 1-3/8 in or 1-1/2 in shop-vac wand.
• Expecting a friction wand to hold a heavy electric powerhead.
• Trapping the cord between telescoping sections.

When To Replace

Bent or dented tube, worn button lock that no longer holds, or a telescopic collar that will not lock. Electric wands with intermittent contacts should be replaced rather than repaired.

What It Is

Non-powered heads for a 1.25 in wand. Bare-floor brushes have a row of soft bristles around a wide air channel; widths are 10, 12 and 14 in (Cen-Tec 34883 10 in, 34905 12 in, 34949B 14 in with wheels; MD 12 and 14 in 'Deluxe' wheeled brushes, Sidewinder 18 in). 'Natural fill' or 'horsehair' means real animal hair bristles (Cen-Tec: 'natural horse hair brush fill') which are softer and less static-prone on wood, tile, stone and laminate than nylon. Combination rug/floor tools have a pedal or slide that retracts the bristles for carpet and exposes them for hard floor; a 'turn and twist' style flips between the two faces.

What It Does

Picks up dust and debris on hard surfaces without scratching; combo tools handle low-pile rugs too. Wheels and swivel/pivoting necks (90 deg or 180 deg swivel on Vacuflo 'Turn & Clean') help under furniture.

Compatibility Checks

• Any 1.25 in friction-fit floor brush fits any standard wand; button-hole versions exist for locking wands (Cen-Tec 35378).
• Wider is not always better: a 14 in head needs good airflow to keep pickup even across the width.

Common Mistakes

• Using a hard-floor brush on carpet (bristles drag, poor pickup).
• Pushing a wheeled brush over grit, which scratches; vacuum grit first with a crevice or combo tool.
• Buying a 1.5 in shop-vac floor tool.

When To Replace

When bristles are matted, splayed or shortened to the point the air channel touches the floor, when wheels seize or lose their rubber tread (scratching risk), or when the neck cracks and leaks air.

What It Is

The standard three-piece above-floor set in 1.25 in: a crevice tool (standard ~8-9 in, 'premium' 13 in, flexible 24 in; some with wide 'paddle' mouths or clip-on wire radiator brushes), a round dusting brush (about 3 in, natural horsehair fill preferred for furniture, lamps and blinds; nylon for rough surfaces), and an upholstery nozzle (4-6 in wide slot, often vented, with a slide-on bristle insert or lint strips). Clip-on wand caddies hold all three.

Compatibility Checks

• Fit the hose handle directly or the wand; with Hide-A-Hose mini-cuff hoses, tools fit directly on the cuff (SmartSoc 1-1/4 in) or need an adapter (RapidFlex 1-3/8 in).

Common Mistakes

• Using a stiff nylon dusting brush on finished wood.
• Letting the dusting brush fill with hair; comb it out so suction reaches the surface.

When To Replace

Dusting brushes when bristles shed or stiffen; upholstery tools when the lint strips wear smooth; crevice tools when cracked.
