An electric powerhead cleans carpet best but needs power through the hose. An air-driven turbine head spins from airflow alone and works with any hose.

Non-electric powerheads in which the vacuum airflow spins a turbine wheel that drives a brush roll through a belt. Full-size turbine heads are 10-12 in wide (Vacuflo TurboCat/RugRat family P/N 7160/7161/T210; Cen-Tec 42060 11 in x 3.5 in, 35268 10 in); hand-held turbine brushes (Vacuflo 6970g-6972g; generic 'pet hair turbo brush') are 4-6 in wide for stairs, upholstery and car seats and usually include 1.25 in adapters. Alternatives: lint-collector pads (Cen-Tec 34005) and rubber-roller 'pet hair & lint brush' tools (Vacuflo Pet Set).
Agitates carpet or fabric to lift embedded hair without any wiring. Vacuflo: 'Turbine Powerheads operate whenever they are connected to a running vacuum', there is no on/off switch, and no adjustment is needed for carpet type. Hand-held units have a suction-relief slide for drapes.
Electric power nozzles have their own 120 V motor so brush speed is constant and higher, which most sources favor for heavy pet hair, but they require an electric hose, cord-channel or integrated wand and an electrified inlet or a pigtail to a wall outlet. Turbines are cheaper, lighter, work on any inlet and any basic hose, but depend on airflow and are louder (turbine whine).
Belt when it slips or squeals (check tension setting first), brush roll when bristles are worn below the base plate, turbine when it rattles or runs slow with clear intake; replace the head when the housing or elbow seal leaks.
